DStv EUTELSAT Star Awards for Young African Students Aged 14-19 – How To Apply

The DStv Eutelsat Star Awards open for applications for young Africans. The awards are positioned to be Africa’s leading satellite technology awards for young minds. The primary aim is to stimulate interest and passion for satellite technology among young people. Awards for Young African Students

The competition is organised by MultiChoice Africa and Eutelsat and entrants are required to write an essay or produce a poster on the following topic: It’s sixty years since the first

satellite Sputnik was launched, broadcasting a unique and easily captured ‘beep, beep, beep’
signal. Looking back at this historic moment, write an essay or design a poster depicting how
satellites have launched humankind into the 21st century and acted as a unifier.

Worth of Award

  • Overall Essay Award: A trip for the winning student and their parent/legal guardian to Eutelsat in France and attendance of a rocket launch
  • Overall Poster Award: A trip for the winning student and their parent/legal to the MultiChoice offices and the South African Space Agency at Hartbeesthoek
  • Overall Essay School Award: A DStv installation, including a dish, TV, decoder and free access to the DStv Education Bouquet
  • Overall Poster School Award: A DStv installation, including a dish, TV, decoder and free access to the DStv Education Bouquet
  • The prizes to France and South Africa include return travel costs from outbound destination, accommodation, transfers, meals for two people. Minors are obliged to be accompanied by and remain in the permanent care of an adult legal guardian/parent.

Eligibility

  • The Awards are open to students between 14 and 19 years of age in secondary, high or combined schools in the countries where MultiChoice has operations
  • Entry forms (including conditions and rules) and competition collateral will be made available in English, French and Portuguese
  • Entry forms will be available at selected MultiChoice Africa Offices. (Please see this entry form for list of country office details) Entrants from South Africa may collect entry forms from the MultiChoice Reception in 251 Oak Avenue, Ferndale, Randburg. (see list of offices on entry form) >

  • Only complete entries submitted by post or deposited at the nearest MultiChoice Africa country or regional office, or in the case of South Africa at the MultiChoice Africa Reception at 251 Oak Avenue, Ferndale, Randburg, will be accepted (see list of offices on entry form)

  • Entries will be accepted in hard copy format only
  • Entries from the previous country or overall award winners will not be accepted
  • Entry forms must be fully completed. Entries accompanied by incomplete entry forms may not be accepted
  • Only entries with attached entry forms will be accepted. It is the responsibility of the entrant to ensure that forms and in the case of posters, creative rationales/summaries, are attached in such a way that they do not become separated from the entry submission. In cases where entries and attachments become seperated, such entries may be disqualified
  • All poster entries have to be accompanied by a creative explanation/summary as specified in the criteria for posters section above
  • To enter, students need to be between 14 and 19 years of age and enrolled at a registered secondary, combined or high school (public or private). Only entries prepared by an individual will be accepted
  • Entry forms and essays/posters must be submitted before the closing date and time.
  • It is the responsibility of the entrants to ensure that entries reach designated collection points prior to the closure of the competition.
  • Any entries not received prior to the closure of the competition will not be eligible to participate, regardless of the reason for the late entry.
  • Only one entry, i.e. either poster or essay, may be submitted per student on the specified topic
  • Entries can be prepared in English, French or Portuguese only
  • Entries must be the own original work of the student
  • Any costs or expenses which the entrant incurs other than in respect of those items specifically included in a prize are for the entrant’s own account.
  • It is assumed that entrants will have sufficient funds available for all costs and expenses which they may incur during and for purposes of entry into the competition > No previously published material will be accepted
  • Only entries in the correct and specified formats will be eligible
  • Plagiarism is forbidden.
  • Entrants may quote short passages, but material copied from a source must be surrounded in double quotes (“) and the source indicated. Copied materials should rarely be more than a few lines, and never as long as a paragraph. Quoting long passages is forbidden. Entries caught plagiarizing will be rejected
  •  All entries must include a full bibliography of sources for the essay. The bibliography should be excluded from the essay word count.
  • The bibliography should be the last page of the essay. In the case of poster entries, the entry form, as well as a creative explanation/summary (inclusive of any sources consulted) must be attached to the poster
  • Entries cannot be returned to participants

Criteria and Post criteria for Essay

  • Language: English, French or Portuguese
  • Length: 1200 – 1400 words
  • Must be typed in Arial 12, 1.5 spacing or it must be handwritten, but clearly legible
  • Pages must be numbered
  • Only hardcopy entries will be accepted
  • Entries may include illustrations, graphics, or diagrams
  • References (all sources consulted during the preparation of the entry)

CRITERIA FOR POSTERS

Design a creative poster by illustrating an idea on the competition topic. The poster must be accompanied by a creative explanation/ summary in the following format: > Title > Summary idea/concept > Explanation of idea > References (all sources consulted during the preparation of the entry) > Language: English, French or Portuguese > Entries may not be bigger than A1 Size and not smaller than A3 Size (297 x 420 mm) > Only hardcopy entries will be accepted. No electronic submission will be accepted

How to Apply

Topic: It’s sixty years since the first satellite Sputnik was launched, broadcasting a unique and easily captured ‘beep, beep, beep’ signal. Looking back at this historic moment, write an essay or design a poster depicting how satellites have launched humankind into the 21st century and acted as a unifier. Students are encouraged to consult with their science or technology teacher to increase the quality of their entries.

  • You may post your entry to your nearest MultiChoice office or hand it in personally at one of the country offices specified on this entry form (only submit entries to country offices specified on this entry form).
  • Only South African entrants may hand their entries in to MultiChoice Africa, Corporate Affairs, 251 Oak Avenue, Randburg, Johannesburg or post them to MultiChoice Africa, Corporate Affairs, 251 Oak Avenue, Randburg, Johannesburg,
