Nigeria Loses Over N1.833billion To Smuggled Frozen Chicken – PAN
Abuja – The Poultry Association of Nigeria (PAN), yesterday, revealed that Nigeria loses over N1, 833,895, 200 billion annually to smuggled frozen chicken.
Director -General, PAN, Mr Onallo Akpa, made this disclosure in Abuja. Speaking at a press conference with the theme: “Opportunities and Challenges facing the organisation over the years,†Akpa decried the neglect of the association by the federal government, and its non-inclusion in the transformation agenda programme for the agriculture sector and accused the federal government of not providing enough support the poultry sub-sector despite its huge contribution to the nation’s economic development.
According to Akpa, the association had placed Nigeria as the number one egg producing country in Africa and fourth in broiler meat production in the continent, with the country produces over 553, 000 metric tons of eggs and 708, 000 metric tons of broiler meat.
He also stated that commercial poultry production stood at about N51. 2 billion, while 85 million Nigerians were into family poultry production, with an asset base of N320 billion, and contributes 25 per cent to the domestic agriculture.
Akpa said: “The poultry industry occupies a prominent position as a major source of animal protein to the citizenry. The advent of democracy in 1999 through 2002 saw to the breath of new life as the then government of Chief Olusegun Obasanjo set up the Presidential Committee on Livestock specifically to evaluate the poultry industry and proffer strategies to the pre-SAP era of oil boom.
“Currently, Nigeria is rated as number one egg producing nation in Africa and the fourth in broiler meat production outside South Africa and some countries of North Africa as Nigeria produced 553, 000 metrictons of egg in 2011 and 708 metric tons of broiler meat.
“Over 95 per cent of imported frozen chicken from Benin Republic ends up in Nigeria through smuggling, thereby translating into economic loss of about N1, 833, 895, 200.
“Over 3 million metric tons of poultry left-overs from Europe were smuggled into Nigeria in three years. Nigerians consume these unwholesome products that lack the chain of cold preservation process, which were finally embalmed with chemicals meant for preserving dead human bodies.â€-Leadership
