Federal Government Re-awards N1.49 billion Zik’s Mausoleum Contract
Nigerian News —The Federal Government of Nigeria has re-awarded the construction of Zik’s mausoleum to a French construction company for N1.49 billion with a completion period of 13 months.
Zik’s Mausoleum is the final resting place of Nigeria’s first President, the late Dr. Nnamdi Azikiwe at his Inosi Onira residence in Onitsha. The project has been awarded four times by the federal government without any success.
Project Coordinator, Federal Ministry of Housing and Urban Development, Mrs. Pat Odogwu, handed over the project documents to the representatives of Bouygues Construction Company yesterday.
Mrs Odogwu said the project was re-awarded to the company because of their competence and technical expertise adding that the federal government is eager to deliver the mausoleum.
She said the project is long over due and urged the contractors to make sure they deliver the project on time and on specification within the specified period.
She said the Ministry had kept its own part of the agreement, adding that the Ministry had mobilised the contractor up to 15 per cent.
“This project is very important to the federal government especially when we look at the importance and great influence the late Zik had all over Africa. We want you to deliver on this project within 13 months and be rest assured that the ministry will not lag behind in the area of funding”
She lamented that the setback suffered by the project was caused by contractors, adding that the new contractor would not disappoint Nigerians.
On the condition of the structure already in place at the Zik’s compound, Mrs. Odogwu said the Ministry had carried structural integrity test on it and had certified it positive.
The first son of the late Dr. Azikiwe, Chief Chukwuma Azikiwe, said the project had been politicised over the years and expressed satisfaction with the efforts by the federal government to complete work on the mausoleum.
Chief Azikiwe who traced the history of the project from the time of the late President Sani Abacha.
“The former Minister, Nduese Essien and the then Permanent Secretary, Chief Ozodinobi, did all their best to see that the project was completed but till date, we are still talking about it. I want to thank the late President Yar’Adua who tried to execute this project”
Bouygues Construction Company, Commercial Manager, Mr. Benet Osuala said they were determined to deliver the project before the expiration of the construction time.-TheNation
