Dangote Donates N20Billion To Charity In 2years
Nigerian News — The philanthropic works of the Dangote Group, the Pan African conglomerate- have increased astronomically to a staggering N20 billion between 2011 and 2012.
The Dangote group Corporate Social Responsibility scheme in Gboko Communities also hit N492million last December, a statement from the group said.
The group had donated N2.5billion to victims of flood in the country, making it the highest corporate donor to flood victims in the history of the country.
Dangote had also donated N50million worth of relief materials and N150million cash to flood victims in Kogi State.
President of the Dangote Group, Alhaji Aliko Dangote also announced a N230million women empowerment fund for Kogi State.
Modeled after the Group’s N600million empowerment scheme for Kano women, the Kogi State’s donation is expected to help ginger economic activities among women in the state.
In 2011, the group’s social responsibility activities were valued at N15.5billion, in what industry watchers described as unprecedented.
The group had intensified its Social Responsibility schemes across Africa.
The statement said early in the year the group had maintained its philanthropic tempo as it doled out a whooping $500,000 to victims of explosion in Republic of Congo.
“The Dangote Industries Limited has also donated N100millon to the University of Science and Technology, Wudil, Kano within the first quarter of last year,” the statement added.
The group had supported the National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) with a million naira within the first quarter of 2012.
The statement quoted the president of the group, Alhaji Aliko Dangote in an interview as saying that he is determined to intensify his charity works, and as well create jobs for many Africans.
“About this philanthropy, I think from this year, I personally want to take it very seriously. I want to be much more aggressive than what we have had in the past.
“We already have a foundation which will do all these things, but I am trying to see what we can do to encourage, not only Nigerians, but other Africans,” Dangote said.
He added, “I am not going to give all my money to charity, but I am going to try my best and give part of that money to charity. I am working hard on it.”
The group gave over N1billion for the rehabilitation of some Nigerian universities.
At the fund raising dinner for flood victims last year, Aliko Dangote had said, “I believe quite strongly that people make the difference and not the balance sheet. We impact positively on the lives of people not by how much money we have accumulated but by how much goodwill we have accumulated.”-Leadership
